The Come and Take It Battle Flag had only one cannon because the people of Gonzales had only one Cannon they were defending.

Explanation:

The New Government of Mexico under General Santa Ana was determined to disarm the American settlers in Texas. There was a small field cannon in Gonzales that had been given to the settlers to help defend themselves against Indian attacks. The Mexican Government demanded that the America settlers give up the Cannon.

The settlers at Gonzales refused to surrender the cannon. Sara Seely De Witt sewed a battle flag showing the one cannon with the words Come and Take it , written under the picture of the lone cannon.

Later there was a battle between the Mexican forces trying to take the cannon and the American settlers defending the cannon. The cannon made the difference and the Mexican forces retreating leaving the cannon in the possession of the settlers.

The Lone Cannon and the motto Come and Take it have become a symbol of resistance to government actions to disarm the general population.
