Of the two atria, the right atrium receives de-oxygenated blood from the veins through the two venae cavae (the superior vena cava drains blood from the upper body and the inferior vena cava from the lower body) and pushes it through the tricuspid valve into the right ventricle which then pumps it into the pulmonary artery that takes it to the lungs for oxygenation.
