Short term effect: it created a huge shock and the war in Afghanistan started since Bin Laden lived there. The war on terror started as a response. A wave of Islamophobia swept through the country. A series of wars in the Middle East started: Iraq(2003), Libya(2011).

Long term effect: The war on terror is not over yet. The foreign policy of aggression in the Middle East is not over either and Islamophobia is still rampant in the USA.
