You use this to calculate the $\left[{\text{H"_3"O}}^{+}\right]$ of a solution (the molar concentration of hydronium/hydrogen ions in solution).

Remember that to find the $\text{pH}$ from a known $\left[{\text{H"_3"O}}^{+}\right]$, we can use the formula

"pH" = -log["H"_3"O"^+]

If we use the properties of logarithms, we can derive that equation from this one:

"pH" = -log["H"_3"O"^+]

-"pH" = log["H"_3"O"^+]
