Moon is a spherical body and 50% of its surface is always lit by Sun.

But from Earth we can not see this 50% full always. Only full moon night we see the Moon's 50% illuminated area..On new moon night we could not see the Moon's disk It is due to our position on Earth this changing phases happens See picture.
