Tito was the communist dictator of Yugoslavia from 1945 until his death in 1980.

Explanation:

Tito led a successful partisan resistance to the Germans during world war II. The partisans under the military leadership of Tito successfully achieved the liberation of their country from the Nazi's without direct military assistance of either the allies or the Soviet Union.

Tito though communist maintained an independent course from the soviet union. Market Socialism allowed both more economic and personal freedom in Yugoslavia. The hard core communists called Stalinist tried to kill and oust Tito. In return Tito used brutal repression methods against the Stalinists. Ironically Tito used Stalinist methods to suppress Nationalism in the six republics that made up Yugoslavia.

With the death of Tito the Unified Yugoslavia also died. Wars, fighting and ethnic cleansing of territories resulted from the breakup of the Yugoslavia. The six republics became independent countries.
