Probably because the South had an economy dependent upon extensive cultivations that needed a lot of (cheap) manpower.

Explanation:

Many southern states had an economy heavily dependent upon the production of few or even only one agricultural product, for example, cotton, tobacco or sugar. On top of this, huge extensions of land (Plantations) were used in the cultivation.

Although products such cotton were in high demand (from England for example) it created the need, for its cultivation and harvesting, of a lot of manpower (mechanization was not at the time very extended) that, to make things more lucrative, needed to be cheap or even...free of charge!
Slavery ensured this kind of cheap and abundant workforce.
