Organic compounds were once thought to only be present in living things. hence the name organic from organisms.

Urea was the first organic compound to be synthesized outside of living things. Now organic compounds refer to any compound containing carbon.

Carbon is most commonly bonded to Oxygen, Nitrogen and Hydrogen.

# NH_2CO_2H# an amino acid is consider to be organic.

An organic compound must have Carbon and be joined to one or more of the other elements.
