Current theory is that it is a solid iron core surrounded by molten iron.
Explanation:
The earth's interior structure and composition are inferred by seismic waves for the most part. It explains in part earth's magnetic fields, and may play a part in the periodic magnetic pole 'reversal' that occurs from time to time (on a geologic scale).
