Explanation:
The whole of Berlin was well within the Soviet sector of occupation in Germany in 1945. However being the capital it was symbolically split into 4 sectors also, Soviet, British, American and French as was Germany.
In 1948 Stalin sealed off these three Western sectors of Berlin in an attempt to force the allies hand. This became known as the Berlin Blockade. However the Western allies flew in supplies and the blockade was eventually lifted.
However relation were now irreparably damaged. The three Western zones of Germany became West Germany and the Eastern zone became East Germany. the same division took place in Berlin.
In 1961 the Berlin Wall was built to stop people crossing into the West. These divisions lasted until the end of the Cold War in 1989.
