# A 3.41*g mass of gold is alloyed with a 2.43*g mass of silver. What is the purity of the gold in terms of "karats"?

Jul 19, 2017

Approx. $\text{14 karat} \ldots \ldots \ldots . .$

#### Explanation:

A $\text{karat}$ is the unit of proportion of gold in an alloy equal to 1/24 part of pure gold.

And thus we gots..... (3.41*g)/(3.41*g+2.43*g)xx100%=58.4%

Now it is a fact that 100% gold is $\text{24 karat}$.......and so we gots 58.4%xx24*"carat"="14 karat"...........

Why do they add copper or silver to the gold? Well, it improves the durability of the jewellery that you make out of the gold. And of course, it maximizes the amount of jewellery you can make while giving a beautiful colour/lustre etc. to the finished item.
