OR

#H_3C-CH_2Cl + NaOH stackrel(EtOH)rarrH_2C=CH_2 + NaCl +H_2O#

Both reactions would occur; conditions would dictate the product mix........substitution is perhaps the likely outcome.....ethylene would be hard to collect.

Some diethyl ether might also be predicted in the product mix. How might this occur?
