I will assume you are referring to the signers of the declaration of Independence made by the American Colonists against England.

Explanation:

I would call the signers courageous to a great extent.

If the United Colonies failed in their attempt to gain independence form Great Britain all the singers would have been declared traitors and enemies of the state. Their signatures on the Declaration would be all the proof a jury would need to find each and every one of they guilty .

Being found guilty of treason against England would have resulted in the loss of all their personal property and wealth, most likely their freedom and quite possibility death by execution. The signers of the Declaration were literally putting their lives on the line to support the concept of freedom.

Few people would have gambled their lives on the possibility of a a rag tag army of poorly armed and poorly trained colonists would be able to defeat the most powerful army and navy in the world at that time. The signers of the declaration of Independence did just that, they gambled that the United States would win the war and against England. If the colonies had lost the war the signers would have lost everything.
