We first count the carbons, then we find the place(s) of the double bond.
Explanation:
(1)
6 C's so "hex-"
1 double bond so "-ene"
double bond at first possible position so "1-"
1-hexene or hex-1-ene
(2)
5 C's so "pent-"
2 double bonds so "-diene"
positions 1 and 2 so "1,2-"
1,2-pentadiene or pent-1,2-diene
The latter names are the official IUPAC names, though the first are easier to pronounce and are still in wide use.
