They are not actually floating, they are connected to the T11 and T12 vetrbrae, but they are called "floating" because they are not connected to the othee ribs.


The "true" ribs (1st-7th) attach directly to the sternum, while the "false" (6th-12th) ribs connect to the 7th rib through cartilage, with the exception of the 11th and 12th, which do not attach to any structure in front (the reason they are called "floating")
