I like to imagine the carbon behind and in front connected by a line, then I draw the stereochemistry as if I'm looking right down the line.

I would call this (3R, 4R)-3,4-dibromo-2-methylhexane.

Get a molecular model kit if you can't understand this, conformational analysis and stereochemistry are really ugly without one.
