One main factor for its decline was the fact that the sons of Harun al-Rashid, a caliph went into civil war with each other, disputing sucession rights. Secondly, provincial governors took advantage of this and started acting independently of the caliphs. Thirdly, there were also many peasant rebellions and invasions from the Saljuq Turks.
