Imperialism was motivated by the defence of Big Business. Ever since 1897 these interests have been the matrix of American Imperialism. Lenin wrote a book about the connection of big business and imperialism and this link can be seen not only in European imperialism but also in American Imperialism.
Murray Rohtbard wrote a book called "Wall Street, Banks, And American Foreign Policy" in which he explained all the connections between Big Business and the American Government which made foreign policy modelled on private corporate interests.
