8 bags are needed to fill the jug

Explanation:

The question's instruction as to calculation ( At this rate, how many bags will it take to fill the entire jug? ) only relates bags and the jug. Although we could work out the jugs volume in pints we are not instructed to do so. Thus the wording is such that the #1/5# pint is an unnecessary detail.

It would be simpler in the method I am going to adopt to use the decimal equivalent of #1/8# of a jug #->0.125#

Using ratio but in the FORMAT of a fraction
As we need the count of bags put this as the top value of the ratio.

#("bags")/("parts of 1 jug") ->1/0.125#

When the jug is full the bottom number will be 1 so we need to change #0.125# into 1.

For multiply or divide what we do to the bottom we also do to the top.

Multiply by 1 and you do not change the values. But 1 comes in many forms.

#color(green)(("bags")/("parts of 1 jug") ->1/0.125color(red)(xx1)color(white)("d")->color(white)("d")1/0.125color(red)(xx8/8)color(white)("d")=color(white)("d")8/1#

So 8 bags are needed to fill the jug
