Osmosis controls the amount of water in cells, the entrance of nutrients, and water into the root.

Explanation:

Osmosis is basically the movement of water from a hypotonic solution (wherein the solutes are concentrated inside the cell) to a hypertonic solution (wherein the solutes are more concentrated outside the cell). This creates an isotonic solution, wherein the two concentrations are equal. This must always happen through a semi-permeable membrane.
Now for the uses: nutrients and water enter the cell through the cell membrane due to osmosis. The kidneys and cells also filter out toxins through osmosis.
Root hair cells in plants also take in water in the soil through osmosis. And we all know how important plants are!
