-preventing infections in incisions
-treating bacterial infections

-buildup of resistance
-side effects on body

Explanation:

positive effects:
1) they can prevent infections in incisions

2) they can be used to treat or prevent bacterial infections

antibiotics, also called antibacterials, are able to treat against bacterial (and sometimes parasitic) diseases, though not those caused by viruses or fungi.

negative effects:

1) natural selection:
sometimes, antibiotics are not used correctly (e.g. if a patient does not regularly take it). this means that the remaining bacteria are more likely to survive high doses of antibiotics. this is resistance, and this resistance can also be inherited by bacterial offspring.

2) side effects
some antibiotics have side effects ranging from mild to severe. common side effects include diarrhea and nausea, but can also involve allergic reactions.
