The chromosomes contain the DNA of the organism. As you can imagine, larger more complex organisms need more DNA to code for the various processes within the organism.
This information needs to be stored somewhere: the chromosome. This larger amount of information usually translates to larger and more numeorous chromosomes, as a lot of the non-coding parts still have regulatory functions and other functions
