The digestive system is separated from the body tissues.

Explanation:

The skin separated the body tissues from the outside. The layers of tissues in the throat stomach, and intestines also separate the food, and liquid from the body tissues. Some substances that are not digested, or chemically broken down in the digestive system, can be shallowed enter the digestive system and pass out of the body without ever truly entering the body itself.

The digestive system through surrounded by body tissues, is actually part of the outside in reference to the body tissues.

Think of the digestive system like a long narrow ocean bay. The bay like San Francisco Bay and Sacramento River Delta system are inland, and surrounded by land. A narrow opening called the Golden Gate connects the bay and delta to the ocean. Whales can swim up must of the way to Sacramento. Likewise the digestive system is surrounded by body tissues, but is not part of the body.
