To quote from another iconic view from the movie "The Graduate", PLASTIC!!

Explanation:

The question is unusually broad. It doesn't specifically define "modern age", nor a particular interest in social, religious or technological perspectives.

One could look at the reason both items are toys, how they were used, and by whom. The common "aspect" that also reflects on the unique character of the "modern age" of both of these items is that they are both made of plastics - the wonder material of modern life.

Volumes can be written (some have been) about the impact of plastics on modern life and technology.

Possibly the subjugation of women by men?

Explanation:

Hula hoops emphasise the narrowness of the waist, and the mobility of the hips. Barbie dolls are renowned for their impossible physical dimensions (neck length, leg length etc etc.) so one could argue both of these were invented (by men) to assert their dominance over women.

Both are just toys, perhaps it is simply that humans love to play and in the modern age have (fortunately) got time to spare?
