Digestive system is one which breakdown the complex substances in the food(we eat) into simpler substances so that they can be absorbed by our body in order to get energy. This energy is required by our body in order to perform its daily activities.

Main Digestive Organ:

  • Mouth or Oral cavity or Buccal cavity
    Breaks the food into smaller chunks and convert into an oval shaped mass called bolus.
  • Pharynx(Throat)
    It helps in swallowing. It also serves as a pathway in the movement of food from mouth to esophagus.

  • Esophagus #to# food pipe
    It perform the function of a carrier. It carries the food from the mouth and transfer it to the stomach.

  • Stomach
    It is a salient digestive organ. It digests the food partly converting it into chyme. Chyme is a thick semi-fluid mass of a partially digested food.

  • Small intestine
    It is another vital organ where #90%# of digestion of food takes place. It's main funtion is the diestion and absorption of all the necessary nutrients present in the food.
  • Large intestne
    It's main function is to absorb water from the remaining indigestable food.

  • Rectum
    It act as a temporary store house for stools before they are eliminated from the body.

Accessory Digestive Organs:

  • Liver
    Its main function is to process the nutrients absorbed from small intestine. Apart from that, Liver secretes Bile which plays a key role in digesting fats.

  • Pancreas
    It helps in digestion by secreting the pancreatic juice. Pancreatic juice contains enzymes necessary for proteins and starches.

  • Gall bladder
    It mainly perform storage role. As it stores the bile untill it's needed for digestion.
