Unfavourable conditions.

Explanation:

Paramecium occasionally reproduce sexually or by conjugation, particularly when it is exposed to some stressful or unfavourable or harsh conditions. Sexual reproduction enhances genetic diversity due to recombination that occur. And hence assist the organism to survive that stressful period.
While, normally or during favourable conditions, paramecium reproduce asexually by binary fission.
