So lets solve $\frac{5}{8} + \frac{6}{8}$ first.

$\frac{5 + 6}{8} = \frac{11}{8}$

We can multiply the answer by $\frac{2}{2}$ (as an example) if you want an equivalent fraction. We can do this because $\frac{2}{2} = 1$, so multiplying by $\frac{2}{2}$, does not change the value.

$\left(\frac{11}{8}\right) \cdot \frac{2}{2} = \frac{22}{16}$ $\leftarrow$ Equivalent fraction

You can do this with any number, just remember to multiply both the top and the bottom when you do so.
