Art Patrons (people that hired Artists) were wealthy people and the Church. Art was produced to support the Church or show the importance of the wealthy and politically important.

Explanation:

The Catholic Church supported many artists as Catholicism encouraged religious art. Catholic churches had a lot of Sculptures and Paintings in them. The Church was the social center of the community.

To show their own importance to themselves and others the wealthy and politically important commissioned art to be privately enjoyed for secular reasons as well as religious ones. Public statues in town squares were still important.

Technically, there became a number of exceptional artists and increasingly sophisticated work. Well done art work reflects well on those who take credit for it. Artists as well were generalists producing Architecture, and Engineering other projects under the sponsorship of others.
