Flap like structure i.e Epiglottis is present to prevent entry of food into windpipe(trachea) instead of food pipe(oesophagus). Consequently, prevents us from choking.

Explanation:

Epiglottis is a leaf-shaped structure located at the base of tongue surrounding the upper end of trachea.

It is a muscularly controlled structure. It acts like a lid. It's is important because it automatically closes the opening of wind pipe(trachea) during the action of swallowing.

If food gets its way into trachea there is likelihood of two situations: if a person fortunately has magnificent immune system and a good cough reflex, there would be no problem and food would be coughed back. But in other case, food can be inhaled into the lungs which can cause serious complication i.e Aspiration.
