It's a misconception. In fact, human heart is located between the lungs in the central portion of thoracic cavity.

Now: Why this misconception exists?
The reason is that the left part of human heart is quite bulky as compared to the right one. Because of this the left section of human heart is bit tilted toward the left side of thoracic or chest cavity. So, it doesn't mean that heart itself is situated in the left side of the body. But no doubt that apex of heart that constitutes superior tips and inferior left ventricle is tilted toward left.
