Some times x rays can be dangerous.They give them for protection

Explanation:

The vest contains a thin layer of lead which is very good at absorbing x-rays. This reduces the dose received by the lungs etc. which do not need to be photographed.

This is important because x-rays are ionising radiation i.e. can cause changes to DNA which may lead to deleterious mutations e.g. tumours.
