In the passive voice, the object becomes the subject. It is the thing being done.
The subject becomes the agent. It is the thing that the verb is done by.
Take 'Has the book been bought by them?':
'The book' has done the verb; it has been bought.
The verb has changed from 'bought' to 'been bought', in the passive voice.
'They' has changed to 'by them'.
