Southern whites did not like it. Blacks enjoyed it for a short amount of time. Northern states wanted to punish the southern states.

Explanation:

Southern whites did not like emancipation, because of this groups like Ku Klux Klan were founded. They felt they were being neglected and used by the northern states because they had rebelled(they were). An example of this would be that for a time a confederate officer was not able to vote and run for public office but an emancipated slave was able to vote and run. This period is known as reconstruction, which was a huge failure, and once it ended in 1877 many democratic southerners got their rights back and quickly put the Negroes down.
