One purpose outlined in the Preamble is to "provide for the common defense."
In essence, this means that the government should protect its people through a strong military.
The Preamble to the Constitution was created just four years after the end of the Revolutionary Way. Many of its authors had fought or been involved in the war, so national defense was an important issue to them.
Some other purposes stated in the Preamble to the Constitution are:
- To promote the general welfare
- To establish justice
- To ensure domestic tranquility
- To secure the blessings of liberty
