When did Sir Francis Drake die?

1 Answer

January 28, 1596

Explanation:

Sir Francis Drake was, within his lifetime, both a hero (being an explorer who was also the second person to ever circumnavigate the Earth) and a villain (being a slave trader and privateer - essentially a licensed pirate).

During the Anglo-Spanish War, Queen Elizabeth I sought to cut off funds to Spain from Panama by having Drake and his cousin John Hawkins to capture treasure there. It didn't go well. Drake suffered a series of defeats and eventually anchored off a different part of the Panamanian coast. It was there that he caught dysentery and subsequently died.
