A hydraulic machine can be used to lift extremely heavy objects. Why is the fluid in the hydraulic machine a liquid rather than a gas?

Liquids are incompressible whereas gases are compressible. Compression takes away some of the energy applied to lift the heavy object. To avoid this it is advisable to use incompressible fluids (liquids).
