They believed governements should be based on the protection of freedom and property instead of tyranny.


Benjamin Franklin and John Locke were enlightment thinkers. They had a strong belief in the individual. They thought that government should be the protector of all basic rights of the individual this included private property which they deemed as essential for the preservation of individual liberty.

John Locke was an important thinker of the Glorious Revolution whereas Benjamin Franklin was a major inspiration for the American Revolution. They emphasized the need for a break with the old feudal societies based on divine right.
