The recognition of the US by the French was critical in the US winning its independence.

The French supplied war supplies and support to the rebelling against the British. The French fleet blocked the retreat of the British from Yorktown. The French army was critical in the victory over the British at Yorktown. The French expertise in building the trench lines, and setting up the batteries were critical in the victory.

Without the support of the French the Americans would not have won the battle at Yorktown that won the war of Independence.
