Japan was awarded German territories and influence in China by the Treaty of Versailles.

Explanation:

Japan entered World War 1 by conquering minor German held Pacific Islands to aid the British. Japan wanted more from the Versailles Treaty but they received Shandong province which had been a German controlled area of China. Germany's trade status with China had also been given.

This put Japan on a footing with the European Powers in China.

The Chinese also entered the war with hopes of gaining but were not allowed anything. The Chinese government's response to Treaty of Versailles resulted in "The May the 4th Movement" in China.
