Anyone know algebra enough to help me out?

You and your friend were working the ticket table at the last school basketball game. The tickets sold for $16 for adults and $10for students. A total of 221
people attended the game and a total of $3050 was taken in at the ticket table. How many adult tickets and how many student tickets were sold?

1 Answer

81 students, 140 adults

Explanation:

We have a certain number of adults (#a#) and students (#s#) attend a game. We're told that a total of 221 people attended the game, and so:

#a+s=221#

We're also told that each adult pays $16 (so the amount collected from adults is #16a#) and each student pays $10 (so the amount collected from students is #10s#).

We're told a total of $3050 was collected, and so:

#16a+10s=3050#

We have 2 equations with 2 variables, so we're good to go. We solve the first equation for a variable. I'll pick #a#:

#a=221-s#

Now substitute into equation 2:

#16(221-s)+10s=3050#

#3536-16s+10s=3050#

#-6s=-486#

#s=81#

#:.a=221-81=140#
