Mercantilism was designed to keep all the financial resources within the "Mother" country. The colonist could only purchase merchandize from England. The colonist usually had to pay more for the goods from England than they would have had to pay from other countries, as England had a monopoly on trade to the colonies. Also the merchants shipped out their seconds, inferior goods that the English merchants had difficulty to sale in England or Europe.

Mercantilism was all for the benefit of England the "mother country" and all to the detriment of the colonies.
