Between 1880 and 1914, which nations were most involved in colonizing Africa?

1 Answer

France and Britain

Explanation:

France and Britain were the two biggest colonial powers in the late 19th century both in Asia and Africa.

Besides France and Britain there were other major powers involved in forming colonies in Africa. Germany controlled large parts of East Africa. as well as Togo in West Africa. Portugal had colonies through out Africa, Angola and Mosambic were two of the largest. The Belgium Congo controlled by Belgium was one of the largest of all of the African Colonies. The Dutch colony of South Africa had been taken over by the British but was supportive of Germany during World War I. Italy was also involved it tried and failed to take over Ethiopia before world war I ( it would successfully colonize Ethiopia before World War II) but did take Libya in North Africa.

The "race" to control Africa, its trade and resources was one of the causes of the World War I. Germany coming late on the scene of colonization was one of the most aggressive of the colonizing nations. After World War I Germany was stripped of its African colonies
