Friction can be a force that propels us forward.

Explanation:

Newtons third law says that for every force there is an equal and opposite force.

In our walking stride, we push backwards on the ground. If there is sufficient friction, our feet do not slip backwards. Following Newton's 3rd Law, the force of friction instead provides an equal and opposite force -- pushing us forward.
