# Caleb types 100 words in 5 minutes. What is the unit rate?

Jan 27, 2018

Unit rate= $20$ words per minute/ $0.3$ words per second

#### Explanation:

We could work out the unit rate in 2 ways:

Per Minute or Per second.

First we will start of with per minute:

Rate=Word/minute

$= \frac{100}{5} = 20$

$\therefore$ He writes 20 words a minute

Per Second:

Find out how many seconds are in a minute (60) and multiply by the total minutes, getting the amount of seconds.

$60 \times 5 = 300$ seconds

Rate= $\frac{100}{300} = \frac{1}{3} = 0. \overline{3}$

$\therefore$ He writes $\frac{1}{3}$ of word a second, so a word every 3 seconds.

Alternate way without using rate equations...

#### Explanation:

Since Caleb trypes 100 words in 5 mins we can say that:

$100 \text{ words" = 5 " minutes}$

Hence we can try and find $1$ minute, and to do this we can divide both sides of the equation by 5, remeber what we do to one side, we do to the other:

$\frac{100}{5} \text{ words " = 5/5 " minutes }$

$\implies 20 \text{ words" = 1 " minutes}$

color(red)(underline( "Hence we can say he types 20 words in 1 minute on average "

Going further we know:

$1 \text{ minute " = 60 " seconds}$

So we can say:

$20 \text{ words " = 60 " seconds}$

To get 60 seconds, we divide each side by 60:

$\frac{20}{60} \text{ words " = 60/60 " seconds}$

$\frac{1}{3} \text{ of a word " = 1 " second}$

 color(red)(underline("Hence we can say he types about 1/3 of a word every second on average "

$20 \text{wpm}$

#### Explanation:

We have;

$100$ words

$5$ minutes

$\text{Unit Rate" = "Words"/"Units}$

$\text{Unit Rate} = \frac{100}{5}$

$\text{Unit Rate" = 20 "WordsperUnit}$

$\text{Unit Rate" = 20"wpm}$
