America really had two industrial revolutions; the first coming between 1810 and 1840; the second from 1880 to 1920.
The first industrial revolution was the mechanization of formerly hand made products, e.g. cloth. It was also the beginning of the first major change in transportation which assisted in industrializing America, the railroad.
The second industrial revolution came out of the Civil War when methods of manufacturing were refined, sped up, and expanded. It saw the introduction of oil as a fuel, electricity for light, and the streetcar for transportation within the cities and nearby neighborhood.
Each of these was driven by conservative industrialists. Vanderbilt, Rockefeller, Steuben, Carnegie and many others. These captains of industry founded a club in New York City, which exists to this day, called the Algonquin Club. The club was used as much for doing business as for social events.
