A black hole is extremely dense much more than any star or plant. This large density and large size relates to a large gravitation field. The magnitude of which can even distort light.

Black hole has very large mass in little Volume which accounts for its Gravity to increase drastically and engulf anything in its way which cross its Event horizon ; in fact its Gravity is so strong that even light cannot escape from it once it cross the event horizon.
