Mutations in the bases sequences of a gene leads to the production of different characteristics. The new characteristics are adapted to a new varied environment such changes are transferred from one generation to another and so one. hence it results in an evolution of new species that are then only adapted and are different from the ancestral species.

hope it makes sense.
