Chemical bonds have to be broken and formed to carry out the chemical reactions that make up your metabolism.

Your metabolism is the collective term for all the chemical reactions that take place in your cells and body (to keep you alive!). This involves synthesis reactions (making a larger molecule from lots of smaller ones - e.g. protein from amino acids), breaking down large molecules into smaller ones (e.g. all the various digestive reactions) and basic reactions like respiration. As with any chemical reaction, it is necessary to break and reform chemical bonds between atoms and molecules for this, making chemical bonds a crucial part of metabolism.
