Easiest way is to explain with a diagram. See below

Explanation:

Assume a car is travelling North at 100km/hr. It then turns E and continues at a reduced speed of 50km/hr .

Question: what is the resultant velocity?

You would have a vector diagram like "A"

Consider a mre involved route. The car goes N, then goes 10 deg E at 50km/hr, then turn E at 70km/hr, then turns N 50 deg E. at 35km/hr

The resultantant velocity vector is "B"

Always remeber velocity has a magnitude value and a direction value.
