There were a number of ways.

Explanation:

Going to college, lying about your physical or mental well being, going abroad to study, going abroad simply to avoid the draft, or going to jail.

Many of these reflected socio-economic and racial divisions in that it was much easier for middle class whites to legally draft dodge. As a consequence the number of working class white and black soldiers in Vietnam was disproportionately high.
